Short Term Work Zone Traffic Control
For Supervisor/Worker Safety
DESCRIPTION:
Highway maintenance and construction jobs are among the most dangerous
for local government employees. Each year, approximately 800 people
are killed in construction work zone crashes. More than 5,000 highway
workers suffered injuries in the 1990's alone. Poor planning, setup,
and flagging techniques are some of the reasons these incidents occur.
As a flagger or supervisor at a highway construction site (or for incident management), the safety of the motoring public is in your hands. Drivers and pedestrians look to you for warnings and guidance. They expect clear and timely instructions, with minimum delay and inconvenience. You also represent the first line of defense for your co-workers. They rely on you to safeguard their personal safety and to keep traffic out of their way so the work can be completed.
This workshop provides a variety of topics and procedures when setting up a work zone, preparing flaggers, and controlling traffic. It teaches safety that benefits the highway worker and the traveling public. Learn how to better manage the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of traffic control devices for your work zones. Identify and apply workable concepts and techniques for setting up and maintaining work zones.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This workshop will be of value to anyone responsible for traffic control.
Supervisors, workers, state, county, and city highway departments--private
construction and utility crews, police departments, emergency management
workers, will all find this workshop helpful. This course is a must
for novice work zone flaggers. Experienced flaggers and supervisors
should attend this course as a refresher and assist with input.
INSTRUCTOR:
Eugene "Gene" Wilson, PE, PhD, PTOE
Gene Wilson has taught traffic control and traffic safety as well as
conducted safety research throughout his entire 30+ year career in transportation.
He has been involved with the MUTCD serving on the subcommittees
for work zone traffic control and also regulator and warning signs.
He has taught over 50 work zone traffic control courses throughout the
United States for state governments, technology transfer programs and also
for the National Safety Council. In addition, he has been actively
